Bio-pesticides are registered with CIB&RC under the Insecticides Act, 1968 in the same manner as chemical pesticides, but against data on strain identity, colony count and viability, contaminant absence, safety, shelf life and bio-efficacy. Products that make a pest-control claim are bio-pesticides; products that only improve plant growth fall under the Fertiliser (Control) Order.
What makes bio-pesticide files different?
For microbial products the Committee looks at the exact strain, the absence of contaminants and pathogens, and whether the viable count holds over shelf life. For botanicals, it looks at the source plant and the marker compound. In both cases, efficacy data must match the crop and pest on the label.
Where do applications stall?
- Strain identity documented only morphologically
- Shelf-life data that does not support the claimed period
- Label claims broader than the efficacy data

Which documents are needed?
- Strain or plant source identification
- Manufacturing process and specification
- Shelf-life study
- Bio-efficacy data
- Safety data
- Label and packaging drafts
The exact list depends on your product and business; we confirm it before filing.
